Berkeley Shooting New Jersey California
Police with the University of California Police Department arrested two men early Sunday morning following reports of gunfire along Grizzly Peak Boulevard near the campus of University of California, Berkeley.
Authorities said the suspects, whose identities had not yet been released pending the booking process, were taken into custody after officers located them and their vehicle near the university’s Signpost 14 area. Officers responded shortly before 5 a.m. after a 911 caller reported that two men were firing handguns in the area.
According to investigators, early findings suggest the men were likely firing shots into the air rather than at each other or anyone nearby. No injuries were reported as a result of the incident.
A resident in the area reported hearing several gunshots around 4 a.m., followed by the sound of police sirens responding shortly afterward. Officers from the Berkeley Police Department assisted campus police during the response.
During the stop, officers recovered a firearm as well as suspected methamphetamine and cocaine. The men were arrested on suspicion of negligent discharge of a firearm, drug possession, being armed while in possession of a controlled substance, and other related firearm offenses.
Officials noted that the incident is part of a concerning trend. So far this year, Berkeley has recorded five non-injury shootings—one more than during the same period last year. The investigation remains ongoing.
